About us

We are students from the Academy of Dasein Academy of Art. We are a group that consists of 4 members which is XingKai, Sheehuei, and Kintuck and hui yee. We are also guided by our instructors which are SookYin and KC.

Dasein is a private college. It was officially established in 1996 for more than 20 years. The school's core believes are that innovative education is not just a skill but it's also a market for employment. One of its locations is located in Wangsa Maju.

'Dasein' comes from a German word which means existence, it advocates the path of creative thinking and aesthetic learning to discover the beauty of a person's purpose.

The academic we chose at the Dasein Academy of Art is the Digital Media course. The reason we chose Digital Media is that in recent years, electronic devices, as well as technology, have become a must for many people, such as our mobile phones and computers. This is the reason why we are learning about modern technology which includes the study of theory, ideas, concepts and technical aspects of design and development. About the competition, we participated in

This project comes from a competition called INyala. This is the first time they have organized an event for college students and other people of all backgrounds to discover fresh and creative ideas through the theme called "Imagine the impossible". They also want to encourage young people and innovators with innovative ideas to bloom and showcase their artwork in this event. It also conveys the importance of innovation and encourages the artist's artistic appreciation and value.

The main purpose of this is

1. Promote the emergence of art and technology in Malaysia.

2. To train a new generation of artists through non-traditional media and platforms.

3. Let people interact with each other through artworks

Then again, there must be reasons as to why we participated in this competition?

There are many competitors in INyala who come from different schools and have different ideas and challenges. In fact, in this activity, it has given us the environment and opportunities to explore new things and let us make different and bold contributions to the public at the same time lets us get rid of our own conventional thoughts. This gives us a deeper understanding of how innovative technology can help us. This is the reason why we want to grasp this rare opportunity to learn from a new environment.

Theme: Imagine the impossible

When we got this theme, we spent a lot of time doing research on this. Before our project called ‘Mindforest’, we thought of ideas about an environmentally friendly art interaction, but we weren’t sure it was eye-catching. Our work cannot interact with the audience's activities which is why we thought, maybe we can use our thoughts to control the lights? Which led us to start researching and think about what we can come up with and how to make our ideas better. With the inclusion of the theme “Imagine the impossible” into ‘Mindforest’, the viewers can interact and communicate with the forest through human thoughts, which doesn’t happen in reality. However, the forest will react to the actions of the audiences. We hope that through MindForest, it can let audiences experience which encourages viewers to interact with it and allow Mindforest to respond back through interactions.

Place and time of the event

The location of this competition is at REXKL (Pasar Seni), and the time starts from November 1st to 30th. This art installation lasts for a month at REXKL. As a matter of fact, in the past REXKL was born in a movie theater but was destroyed soon later by a fire within parts of the building.

However, with a collective of architects, social innovators, brand identity builders, and filmmakers, they redesigned the Rex Cinema Building into a business-driven community space for everyone to use.
The new REXKL was born out of the desire to reimagine a community space within the heart of the city - where individuals and groups from different backgrounds can meet and connect.

‘Mindforest’ concepts and ideas

In society nowadays, all of us live incredibly fast-paced lives and “taking things slow” is often labeled with laziness ad unproductive. This phenomenon results in a big issue which faced by the majority of the people – anxiety, and stress. This interactive installation art invites “busy”
 Audiences to do something which seems impossible to them – rest and takes things slow.

‘Mindforest’ will be installed in a space that belongs to the audience. It will be dark when remained idle. This will represent a dark forest. The dark forest symbolizes stress, pressure, anxiety, and fear within the audiences. When people become calm, the dark forest illuminates which will guide us out of the darkness and find the truest self.

People use thoughts to communicate and interact with the forest. ‘Mindforest’ remind people that ‘taking things slow’ is not a bad thing. It is when we rest and be in peace, our world will illuminate with brightness and positivist.

Interactive approach

The audience will be wearing an EEG Sensor which is connected to the Arduino Mega. EEG Sensor will capture the brain wave frequency and Arduino Mega will process the data and trigger the LEDs accordingly. Through biofeedback and physical computing, audiences will be able to communicate with the forest with it responding back to the audience through light.
